Why Puerto Plata?
Puerto Plata is for those seeking an attractively-priced rest & relaxation vacation with the option of several interesting places close by. Choose Puerto Plata if you're the explorer type. Playa Dorada, Cofresí, Maimón, and Luperon are the main tourism enclaves located near the city of Puerto Plata.
Playa Dorada, 10 minutes east of Puerto Plata, has the largest concentration of hotels in the northern region with14 low-rise vacation resorts built in a ?U? shape sharing a common beautiful beach and the Playa Dorada Golf Course, an 18 hole course designed by Robert Trent Jones. Meet guests from other hotels during evening outings at the casinos and nightspots open to all guests. During the day visit the Playa Dorada Plaza shopping center with stores and a movie theatre. Sidewalks connect all the hotels, and guests enjoy strolling along these or the beach. With all the hotels being so close together, this is a great choice for spring break travel.
Cofresí is located west of Puerto Plata and is an enclave of several smaller hotels that use the same Cofresí beach facilities.
Maimón is located about five minutes from the highway entrance to Cofresí and features a lovely beach dotted with pristine all-inclusive resorts that used to cater to Europeans but are now attracting large numbers of North Americans as well. Maimón is for those seeking rest and relaxation, with the main attractions being the beach and other comforts provided by the hotel.
Luperón is about an hour?s drive west of Puerto Plata. Luperon Beach Resort is quite isolated and has its own beach. Perfect for those who want to get far away from it all but still enjoy luxury. Just minutes away is the La Isabela National Park, which houses a small museum dedicated to the first European settlement in the New World.
What else is nearby
To the East, about 15 and 25 minutes away, are the beach towns of Sosua and Cabarete, and further beyond, Playa Grande and Rio San Juan. The second largest city in the DR, Santiago, is less than an hour away to the south.
Port of Entry/How to get there
From abroad, the best way to get here is by flying into the Gregorio Luperon International Airport located west of Puerto Plata. This places you just 15 minutes from Playa Dorada.
Getting around
Within Playa Dorada, bicycle tours are available to visit the other hotels in the complex. Note that bracelets are used to identify the resort where guests stay and that also marks whether they are an all inclusive guest. Some hotels may restrict admission to those with the correct bracelet only. Hotels that are not located on the beach will offer shuttles to the beach and back several times a day. Nevertheless, for the most part, the entire complex is walkable. At night, casinos will provide a free taxi service to the casino but not for the ride back to the hotel. Transportation from the Playa Dorada complex is provided by taxis and some hotels offer a free shuttle bus to town. At the highway entrance to the complex, you can catch a public bus or guagua in either direction, east or west.
Opened in 2005, this luxury hotel complex was built in the colonial style in harmony with the surrounding natural landscape. The hotel features 50 junior suites, a cosy lounge bar, a breakfast restaurant close to the beach and a stylish gourmet restaurant with gorgeous views of the mangrove biosphere.
If you are planning your next holidays in the Dominican Republic, and are looking for a small, family-run hotel, the Casa Valeria Hotel is probably the accommodation you are looking for. Situated in the stunning north coast, this lovely 3 star hotel in Sosúa is conveniently situated within walking distance from the beach. The hotel enjoys a privileged location in a quiet spot, though surrounded by lively bars and restaurants.
The Grand Paradise Playa Dorada has everything you could want in a tropical vacation. The resort lies on a beautiful beach on the Dominican Republic's scenic northern coast.
