Gergetown is the capital and largest city of Guyana. Facing the Atlantic Ocean, it is located in the Demerara-Mahaica region, at the mouth of the Demerara River. In 2001, it had a population of 225,800.
Sugar, sugar cane, bauxita, gold and diamonds are exported from Georgetown?s port. The country?s economic and administrative centre, Georgetown is home to the University of Guyana and such historic constructions as Saint George Cathedral, a good example of Victorian-era architecture.
Georgetown was founded by the British in 1781. It subsequently passed to French hands (1784) and, following this, came under the control of the Dutch, which renamed the city Stabroek. It was recovered by the British in 1812 and re-christened with its former name. It was British Guyana?s capital until Guyana?s independence in 1966. Large parts of the city were destroyed in the fires of 1945 and 1951, as many public buildings and homes had been constructed out of wood.
As Guyana?s largest city, Georgetown contains most of the country?s main businesses. CARICOM?s main offices are located in the metropolitan area.
