Nevis is about 350 km southeast of Puerto Rico and 80 km west of Antigua. The capital is Charlestown. Nevis is federated with Saint Kitts in the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. The two islands are separated by a 2-mile (3.22 km) wide channel.

The island is borded by a long strands of golden sand beaches and has a coastline intermittently protected by coral reefs. The colour of the sand is a result of the mixture of coral, foraminifera and volcanic sand. The most famous beach is the 6.5 long Pinney's Beach on the west coast. In the interior, rivers and ponds fill up seasonally, and the gently sloping coastal plain also has natural fresh water springs, especially along the west coast.
